The best SEO method is to use all methods at once. Building a quality website with good content, in good form and putting a bit of effort into marketing through link building, article writing, blogging, etc. will do wonders. You don't have to shell out hundreds or thousands on AdWords or similar ad camaigns to get decent traffic, both organic and referral, to your website..
I am right now participating to the international webmaster and search engine optimization contest "Seocontest2008" organized by UK Webmaster World. I hope the experience gained will allow me to publish some worthwile experience.
Time being I've learned that the strategy most used by participants to Seocontest2008 is: "links, links and links".
My seocontest2008 web site ranked well after only 5 days just by using a few dozens of links, even though it was a simple html page.
Now, when I added Drupal CMS, and I've spent some time in customizing it, instead of more link building, many other contestants overtook it.
I am know again concentrating a day or two on link building, before to start building more content. And I'll try to make the content in a way to let others byte and place some links to it.
