What is the Open Directory Project? Why Do I Want to Submit There?

The Open Directory Project (ODP or DMOZ) is the largest, human-edited directory on the Internet. The ODP volunteers list hundreds of web sites into a vast, comprehensive list of categories. A listing in DMOZ can generate both traffic and links since many sites use ODP data.

How Do I Submit to the Open Directory Project?

Take a moment and read through the DMOZ submission guidelines. Please follow them - for the good of your own listing as well as everyone else's. Blatant violations or omissions in procedure will result in your suggestion being deleted not to mention the time and effort that will have been wasted.

I've Submitted My Web Site to DMOZ. What Can I Expect to Happen Now?

Waiting. Because of the volume of suggestions they get every day, volunteers may take many months to get around to an given request. Many of the categories are so bogged down with spam, that quality web sites must wait up to a few years to be listed. The only thing that can be done after suggesting your URL, is to wait patiently. You may check to see if your submission was received at Resource Zone.

I've Submitted My Web Site Six Months Ago and It's Still Not Listed. What Next?

If you have verified that your submission was received and is awaiting review, wait some more. Focus your extra energy on developing your web site. There isn't really anything that can be done to speed up the process. As it is, the process is slowed down by over-zealous webmasters who submit repeatedly, submit in too many categories at once and otherwise make extra work for the volunteer editors.

If it's Such A Hassle, Why Should I Bother?

It's not written anywhere that you must be listed in DMOZ to have a successful web site. If you think submitting to ODP is a waste of time and energy, don't do it. But since you have the opportunity to submit once and forget about it, why not give it a try. A listing can only benefit you by directing targeted traffic to your web site.

Resource Zone no longer accepts submission status requests. Apparently, there was a lot of abuse of the privilage. What do they still do? I'm not sure.
