What Does Scanning Pictures Have to do With Web Design?

Scanning photographs is a large part of web site development. All web sites feature graphics of one kind or another. Also, using your own logos or pictures saves the cost of purchasing stock photos.

Is Scanning Pictures Something That I Can Do Myself? Is it Easy?

Scanning photographs at home or the office is simple and affordable. If you would like to scan your own photographs for use on a web site, please keep a few things in mind:

  • Scan the entire photograph. This gives the web site or graphic designer enough to work with.
  • Make sure to use a high resolution, at least 150 dpi. This way, when the images are modified, there will be no loss in image quality.
  • If you are selling a product from your web site, images may be available from the manufacturer.

What About Using a Service? I Don't Want to Bother Scanning Pictures.

If you only want to have a couple of images for your web site, it may not be cost effective to buy a scanner. There are several companies, such as Kinko's, that will scan your photographs and save the images to CD ROM. They usually charge based on the file size of the images as well as the CD ROM itself.

Scanning by the Web or Graphic Designer: Easier and/or Cheaper?

Many web or graphic design companies scan pictures for your web site for no additional cost. Scanning services are included as part of the web design. In this case, you should bring clean, undamaged logos or photographs to be scanned when you discuss the web site design project.
